Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • Pink food coloring
  • For Buttercream Frosting:
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp heavy cream or milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pink food coloring
  • Decoration: Fondant or buttercream pink bow
  • Optional sprinkles or edible pearls

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line one 9×13-inch pan and one 8-inch round pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well.
  4. Mix in vanilla extract and pink food coloring until desired shade is reached.
  5. Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk, mixing until just combined.
  6. Divide batter evenly between prepared pans.
  7. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool completely.
  8. Cut the round cake in half and trim the rectangular cake to form a heart shape. Assemble into a heart.
  9. Beat frosting ingredients until smooth and fluffy. Tint frosting pink.
  10. Frost the entire cake smoothly and decorate with a pink bow and embellishments.

Notes

  • Tip: If you don’t have a heart-shaped pan, carve from a square cake or use the two-layer method described.
  • For a more vibrant pink, add a few more drops of pink food coloring.
  • Chill the cake briefly before frosting for cleaner edges.
  • Store leftovers covered in the fridge for up to 3 days; bring to room temperature before serving.
